21 March 2010 - 21 May 2010

I hope you've all got Friday May 21st in your diaries already, it's the ninth annual Silver Surfers' Day, and it's the Friday of Adult Learners' Week.

SSD is the largest, annual, national, digital literacy campaign for older people in the UK and it's been running since 2002. SSD provides local people and organisations with the planning and the learning resources needed to open their doors on SSD to local older people and offer them a taste of digital technology.

SSD used to be all about showing older people the Internet, having a go on the world wide web and email, but as times change and technology becomes more prolific and diverse, we've been stretching the definition of 'digital' to accommodate. On SSD 2010, we'll also be helping local Event Holders to cover issues like digital TV and switchover, mobile phones, iphones, cameras; there'll be resources on Twitter, blogging, Flickr, Facebook et al. As well as the 'standard, basics' of digital media use and application.

For SSD2010, the special focus will be on encouraging and supporting intergenerational SSD partnerships. They are particularly keen to grow their 'Schools for Silver Surfers' initiative, which resulted in 66 partnerships between local schools and sheltered housing schemes in 2009. You can read more about that here: http://silversurfers.digitalunite.com/

SSD is a celebration of the fact that everybody, including older people, has got 'digital potential'. For Event Holders, it's fun, it's easy, it's supported by an expert SSD Team at Digital Unite. For older people, it's local, it's free, it's sociable and instructive. SSD allows all of us, wherever we are, to make a significant contribution to reducing the digital isolation of older people.
